SDBS Project Management Unit (PMU) Office Opened

SDBS office blockThe new office block of the Social Development and Benefit Sharing (SDBS) project, one of the Nile Basin Initiative projects under the Shared Vision Program (SVP) has been inaugurated. The inauguration took place on 19th December 2007 at the Nile Basin Secretariat in Entebbe, officiated by the Hon. Jennifer Namuyangu, Minister of State for Water, representing the Chairperson Nile Council of Ministers (Nile-COM), Hon Maria Mutagamba. The Hon. Minister alluded to the significance of SDBS project to the lives of the people of the Nile Basin and the need to translate the cooperation to better livelihoods.

She applauded the member countries of the Nile Basin Initiative for their efforts towards achieving regional cooperation and said the Cooperation Framework Agreement, once adopted and ratified, will further strengthen the cooperation.

The building was provided by the government of Uganda to serve as the Project Management Unit (PMU) for the SDBS project. It was refurbished with seed money from the government of Uganda, with additional resources from the Nile Basin Trust Fund.

The SDBS project holds its Third PSC Meeting (19-20 December 2007)

The Social Economic Development and Benefit Sharing Project of the Nile Basin Initiative’s Shared Vision Programme held its Third Project Steering Committee meeting at Entebbe on 19 and 20th December 2007.

The Project Steering Committee is the highest policy body, which provides policy guidance to the project. During the Third meeting, the PSC will deliberate on the 2007 Annual Report of the Project and review and approve the 2008 Annual Work Plan.

The Project has completed a second year which was marked by the preparation of and completion of Scoping Studies throughout the Nile Basin, within the agreed upon priority areas of benefit sharing, cross border trade, energy, food security, and water/natural resources management.

A stakeholders Forum was held from October 29 to 31, which brought together the nine Participating Institutions from the entire region, Civil Society Organizations (Nile Basin Discourse Forum), Development Partners representatives and staff of the NBI> The Forum reviewed the findings of the Scoping Studies and established research priorities for SDBS Nile Transboundary Development Network for 2008. Apart from agreeing on research themes/topics, the Forum also agreed on areas requiring the formulation of policy briefs that will inform further cooperation endeavors in the Nile Basin Countries.

The PSC was attended by representatives of the member countries,development partners,the subsidiary Action Programmes and invited observers
